Seven people died and scores injured when the Gran Trunk express known as the Pan American flyer struck a crowd of Polish excursionists waiting on the Detroit track to return to Toledo. Police tried to hold crowds back as the train roared through. Engineer Thomas H. Hart said the crossing was not a regular stop and he did not see the crowd until impact.
