Remarkable lung operation for cure of consumption reported
The Cure of Consumption in The Medical Gazette describes an operation opening a chest wall to reach the lung cavity. In a brief, seconds long procedure the patient’s pulse fell from 120 to 68 in 24 hours, respiration freed, cough and expectoration ceased. A month later he gained flesh and strength, respiration natural, pulse 80, cough gone. The report, by Dr Hastings and Mr Storks, notes stethoscope use and earlier neglect of such methods. Also mentions a patent reaper by C A Cormick and a Salem county agricultural display of labor-saving machinery.

Fire destroys Tribune printing offices in New York
The New York Tri Bune office suffered a severe blaze at Spruce and Nassau streets. Firemen fought the flames for hours, destroying the Tribune printing establishment, the periodical depot of W H Graham, Jansen and Bell booksellers, Kennedy’s liquor shop, and the Deutsche Schnell post German journal. Losses exceed insurance, with over $10,000 torn from Jansen & Bell. Greeley & McElrath report similar damages and vow to resume in new type, aided by neighbors. The office later relocates to 39 Ann Street and thanks volunteers, with Croton water cited as saving the nearby buildings.

Passage of the Fauh Bill Cleared by House Vote
The Bank bill passed the House after a long session from 2:30 to 8:00 P M with a 40 to 30 vote. The minority's harsh rhetoric dominated debate as Coombs of Gallia and Paine of Portage responded. Paine's remarks were carried over to tomorrow along with Harvey's, while the majority remained stoic and critical of demagogues and the bill’s opponents. The law will take effect, and future Bank wars are anticipated as bankers push to shape finance for all parties.
