Annette at the Flower Show at Garfield Park Conservatory

The 55th annual Chicago Park district spring and Easter flower show opens Saturday at Garfield Park Conservatory and runs through Sunday April 9. Easter lilies, 2000 grown at Garfield Park, dominate the display with a Dutch cottage scene featuring a thatched roof and a stork. A large Easter egg display, framed by floral arrangements, and an incubator with chicks are highlights. Guide services for schools and civic groups are available by telephoning Kedzie 3-1281.

Loganites March on Boys Court in Local Prosecution

Logan Square residents organized a march to attend the arraignment of Leroy Buckner and Frank Matussi on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The event stems from repeated police raids on the Buckner Matussi apartment at 1812 North Pulaski.

Chess for All In Mozart Park Meet Wednesday

Eight chess divisions will run at Mozart Park 3840 Armitage next Wednesday March 29. Juniors 9 to 12 and seniors over 18 will play separate times with separate boys and girls events. Intermediates 15 to 17 start at 7 pm and novices start at 4 pm.

Outdoor Easter Assembly in Logan Square Church Leaders Unite

The Christian churches of Logan Square join for a second annual outdoor Easter assembly at the Square Milwaukee and Kedzie. About 300 residents attended last year. Fr. Robert Orpen heads the committee with Rev. Pietrusiak and Rev. Rygh among organizers. Fr. Orpen promises free boulevard parking.

ONC Continues Organization Set April Meets

Ten new organizations attended last week's meeting of the Organization of Northwest Communities an umbrella group for neighborhood and community groups in the area bounded by Grand Narragansett Belmont and Pulaski The Kelvyn Park fieldhouse at 4438 Wrightwood hosted the session with over 100 delegates many from Kelvyn Park Fred Wrzesinski 4738 Schubert outlined the group goals as ONC chairman

Park District Launches Expanded West Side Recreation Program

A West Side area task force will organize a greatly expanded city recreation program. From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in summer, the district plans continuous tournaments and new day camps, with swimming and fitness classes on major beaches. Cooperation with schools YMCA and community groups is emphasized.

DePoy Trial Set to Begin April 4 in Murder Case

Judge James Geroulis scheduled the trial for John DePoy Jr. 16 on murder charges stemming from a July street gang beating that killed 17 year old Robert Gnutek near Nixon School. DePoy defense seeks witness statements after state files examined. Two co defendants, Robert Little and Ronald Jeffrey both 17, face separate trials.

Easter Mass to Commemorate Irish Martyrs

The solemn memorial mass for the 1916 Easter Rebellion martyrs will be offered at noon Easter Sunday at Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica in Jackson and Albany. Rev. Joseph Madden CO.S.M. will celebrate and preach. Members of Irish organizations will participate in the service.

Kiss for a Hero Honors Fire Chief and Captain Polcyn

Girl Scout troop 584 presented scrolls and a kiss to Chief Patrick Neary and Capt. Thaddeus Polcyn for saving the lives of four year old Jeannie Winchester and her four month old sister Joan by crawling through a burning Chicago apartment at 1942 N. Springfield. Neary and Polcyn were celebrated with their families and troop leader Mrs. Leonard Herwood as they received the accolades.

Easter Egg Hunts Light Up West Side Parks

Parks across the West Northwest Side host Easter events from Kelvyn and Kosciuszko parks to Humboldt Riis and Austin Town Hall. The Humboldt Park hunt for 400 children features three age groups and an Easter Bonnet contest with handmade hats. Tickets are free at the park fieldhouse.

Animals Have Free Meals At Bert Black Home

In Austin the Bert Black residence at 658 N Latrobe offers year round feeding for birds and squirrels. The nuts grapes and meals on window sill kitchen table and even indoors drew in wildlife and sometimes uninvited visitors. The Blacks keep sharing food despite animals taking extra with them.
