Boston Area Rush to Equalize Railroad Rates for Iowa Events
Frederick Manley Ives, commerce counsel for the New York chamber of commerce, filed a brief with the Interstate Commerce Commission on behalf of Boston and other cities challenging railroad rate plans. The brief argues that lower interior rates would shift revenue and harm wholesalers, while through rates at St Louis and Chicago would unfairly benefit larger markets. It contends that the current through rate breaks are unjust and that railroads favor eastern wholesalers, disadvantaging Des Moines and other Iowa travelers heading to the state fair and related events. The Commercial Club accuses railroads of failing to provide adequate facilities and of discriminatory ticket practices harming travelers leaving and returning from Iowa locations.
