Four Hubbard teachers named teachers of the year

The Hubbard Christians in Action Committee honored four Hubbard school teachers at the May 27 baccalaureate service at St. Patrick Church. Recipients include Brenda Dulaney Reed Middle School Margaret Halavick Roosevelt School John Benigas and Rita Gontaruk St. Patrick School. Each was praised for dedication experience and creative teaching methods.

Lucas secures reelection bid in 58th District primary win

Incumbent June Lucas captures the Democratic primary for the 58th District with 10 508 votes to 9 035 over Diana Marchese. She dominates Weathersfield and Liberty townships and narrowly carries Niles, while Marchese pockets Girard and rural areas. Lucas to face Republican Jay Baldwin in November.

Township police levy may appear on ballot

Hubbard Township trustees discussed a potential levy to fund the police department at a May 30 closed session. The plan would seek wage concessions from officers, keep dispatching in-house, and place a levy on the November ballot, with layoffs if concessions fail. Public hearings were set on zoning changes and a permissive motor tax.

Reed Middle School to Revive Home Economics With State Funds

Hubbard The Impact Home Economics Program will be implemented at Reed Middle School in 1990 91 with 85 percent state funding. Principal Gene Euonomici Buonamici said the program aids students with special needs and focuses on social development, relationships, behavior, life skills, cooking and budgeting. A single seventh grade and an eighth grade class will run with groups of 12 to 16, aiming to boost self esteem and goal setting through home visits and conferences. The teacher position is expected to be filled by June.

Square dancing improves mind and heart in Hubbard

Frankie Hammond of the Steel Valley Squares notes doctors often recommend square dancing for heart and mind health. The group, formed about 25 years ago, draws 70 couples from Hubbard, Youngstown, Boardman, Austintown, and Canfield, ages 30s to 70s, with members from diverse professions. Lessons begin in September. the club welcomes locals and out of town singles, offering partner guarantees for classes.

Hubbard Tiny Tots Photo Contest Opens Entries

Hubbard officials seek photos for the Tiny Tots pageant open to children under four living in Hubbard or Hubbard Township. Submit a recent head and shoulders photo with child and parent details. entry fee is 5 dollars. The winner will be announced July 13 at Roma Manor during the Hubbard Founders Day events with prizes awarded July 14.
