Howland Local Schools supporters from the levy committee met with parents on March 22 to explain the renewal operating levy. Jim Herriman Sally Wehmer and Dean Peterson answered questions outlining kindergarten improvements and other benefits to the district.
Bonnie and Vin Chmielowiec launch a balloon delivery service in Howland offering personalized arrangements for birthdays new arrivals anniversaries and hospital gifts. Services include latex foil and mylar balloons with thematic costumes and songs to accompany deliveries. Call 856-7224 or 856-7209 for requests.
Howland-Wendy's near Youngstown Road becomes a community art space with a bulletin board. Fifth grade students from North Road and Howland Glen, guided by Mrs. Shirley O'Dell, submit pieces judged for certificates of excellence. the top work wins a Frosty. Bi monthly exhibits will feature Pointillism studies and other themes, rotating with March dates.
The 20th Phoenix Publications Cookbook invites entries by April 8 with a $300 Grand Prize gift certificate and nine category prizes of $20 each. Changes include Meatless Main Dishes replacing Appetizers and Microwave Cooking replacing Miscellanius, with tenured rules on entry format and mailing details to Niles Ohio.
United Telephone officials at a press conference outlined deregulation effects planned for January 1. Local monthly charges are expected to rise by about $4 to $9 over seven years, while long distance may drop. The company plans to phase out leasing, pushing customers toward purchasing phones with costs around 17.95 to 39.95, and to allow continued leasing for current customers.
Warren’s only candy factory Kozy Korner Candies produces about 100000 pounds of chocolate confection yearly. Owners Lou and Lois Chimbidis run the shop at 2791 Elm Rd across from Gretchen Plaza and emphasize handmade, natural candy made fresh daily in their own kitchens. Millie Basile, who started the business nearly 30 years ago, still advises and helps with recipes, while the couple are learning candymaking craft and insisting on no wax or preservatives.
