Three Howland students head to state contest in Columbus
Three Gordon D. James Career Center students will travel to Columbus for the Ohio Office Education Association Regional Skills Competition. Laurie Gintert earned second in data processing concepts II, Sharon Finney and Patty Truran placed first in bulletin board entry, and Leslie Thorpe earned third in data entry I while Patty Truran finished fifth in data entry II. Eight seniors and several juniors participated, with a regional contest at Trumbull County Joint Vocational School drawing 28 competitors.

Howland High Holds Parent-Teacher Conferences
Howland High School will hold parent teacher conferences from 8 30 a m to 4 30 p m on March 9. Parents can call 856 5971 to make appointments or return conference request forms sent home. Grades 9 12 students will not attend school that day.

World Understanding Week planned by Rotary Clubs
Rotary clubs worldwide observe World Understanding Week February 20 26 to foster international understanding goodwill and peace. The Howland club reported hosting youth exchange students and supporting five participants abroad including New Zealand Sweden Mexico and Brazil while sponsoring a Group Study Exchange team in New Zealand to build U.S. and New Zealand ties.

Howland High School students sell tiger head patches to raise support for a renewal operating levy on the March 22 special ballot. Tami Foster leads the Student Senate efforts with ninth grade and junior high members also taking part.

Oedipus in Wonderland staged by university students
Bowling Green State University students and Howland High School graduate Michael Smith collaborated on a 13 member experimental theater project titled Oedipus in Wonderland directed by Dr. David Addington. Performances occurred at the university in February. The play blends Oedipus Rex and Alice in Wonderland themes to explore self discovered truth through a series of vignettes.

Howland teen named hero for saving friend from fire
Tim Miller of Howland received the first Heroism Award from Local 2786 IAFF after he tackled Dennis Richards during a propane torch mishap that ignited gasoline. Dennis suffered severe burns, while Richards was hospitalized in Akron. Firefighters credit Miller with saving Richards' life and calm action during the five to ten second blaze.

Engineers honor Youngstown students at awards dinner
Eight area high school seniors were honored guests at the National Engineers Week dinner in Mahoning Valley. Joseph Mrus and Mark Schnaible of Howland High were recommended for national college engineering scholarships, with winners announced in April and awards ranging from 1000 to 15000 dollars. Guest speaker Russell H. Scoville, president of American Skyship Industries, discussed plans to produce rigid metal clad dirigibles in Youngstown.
