Ala Mode opens as Howland ice cream shop and lunch spot
A new privately owned eatery in Howland named Ala Mode debuts beside Market Place offering daily made ice cream and a lunch menu. Michelle DiCristofaro recalls childhood ice cream memories and runs the shop with husband Pat. Hours run 11 AM to 10 PM with drive through pickup, menu includes hot dogs, burgers, chicken and dinners priced from 1.89 to 2.79.

Local doctor to present study at national learning disabilities meeting
Dr James J LaPolla director of the Developmental Clinic in Howland will present a scientific paper at the National Association for Learning Disabilities meeting in New Orleans on February 29 1984. The study titled The Use of Subtests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Revised to Determine Response to Medication for Hyperactivity outlines two years of research at the clinic conducted with an interdisciplinary team. The project grew from an initial fellowship awarded from Boston Children’s Hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School. The Developmental Clinic Inc uses neurology psychology and education specialists to evaluate children and tailor programs with families and teachers.

Roller skating lesson brings gym class to Howland students
Marilyn Parise Howland reports ninth grade students tried roller skating in the school gym for a day with Top of the Strip Roller Rink manager Tom Carden. Lessons cost 1 dollar, include skates and instruction, and promote fitness per the American Heart Association and Presidents Physical Fitness Program. The rink plans school child parties and church and Scout programs with 75 cent skate rentals.
