Inland and coastal areas see steady rain with mixed winds and cooler air. Power and street crews monitor outages as storms move through Montgomery El Paso and nearby locations with unsettled conditions prevailing tonight.
Corry K Corry Prohawilithes Washington June 1 reports showery skies in the eastern portions with northerly winds. Louisiana Partly cloudy with sprh showers in the northern portion and southerly winds. Texas New Mexico Oklahoma and Indian Territory variable winds with generally fair to unsettled conditions. Arkansas partly cloudy with showers in the eastern portion and variable winds.
Reports from Havana describe heavy fighting near Santiago de Cuba as insurgents and gunboats press a coastal defense. An estimated 200 dollars worth of ammunition was expended amid bombardment, with casualties on the Spanish side and reduced supply lines for Santiago. The insurgents claim several Spanish fatalities and say the town faces famine as blockade tightens.
From Guantanamo Bay June 12 13 marines under Lt Col Huntington fight Spanish guerilla and regulars for hours with heavy casualties. Lt Neville's detachment repels repeated assaults, five Spaniards killed, one marine dead and another wounded. Texas and Marblehead reinforcements arrive.
Officials report the Dominican government seized a former Senor Jiminez led enterprise at Monte Cristo Santo Domingo now owned by a German merchant. The consul general requests a warship to protect German interests after President Heurreaux's regime demands a $200,000 fine for Jiminez affair. private guards were removed and the warehouse doors broken by Dominican officials.
A special dispatch reports positive proof that the Cadiz squadron under Spain’s Admiral Camara will not be ready for sea for weeks. The Alfonso XIII and Princess de Asturias are unfinished or under repair, while Cadiz forts are being strengthened with new guns. The London Chronicle notes the squadron should not alarm Americans.
The Marblehead and Texas landed reinforce ments as Marines battled Spanish forces at Guantanamo Bay.
