The prize medal contest under the WCTU was to be held at McKee Street Church last evening at 4 15 but was postponed due to rain. If weather clears the contest will be held at the same place and time next Thursday evening.
Galveston July 1 The Harbor improvement bids were opened for Aransas Pass Brazos Santiago and dredging coal costs surged with recent contracts showing increases. Clarke & Co and Mitchell bids were higher than expected while the government dredge Comsto may be sidelined until coal prices adjust. Work on the Texas City channel begins. plan calls for a 10 foot by 25 foot channel to Galveston with completion by July 2, 1902.
Baundére, a longtime City Railroad Co employee and former Denver car conductor, was found dead in bed at 6:40 am at his home on Thirty Fifth and N. The physician ruled death due to rheumatism of the heart. He was about 52, leaving a wife and an eight year old son. The street car workers union will arrange the funeral.
The brick paving on Twentieth Street was laid at 2 PM today and progress will continue quickly. Five carloads of vitrified brick arrived in Galveston last night and are being stacked near the site. The foundation is thick and being prepared for the final layer.
Starting tomorrow Brush Electric will remove its offers to new works where improvised quarters have been set up and all business will be conducted there. In Orange, Texas, three dry kilns of the Luther & Moore Timber Co burned at 0 20, with 60,000 feet of lumber lost and $15,000 in damage. one kiln would have finished drying that afternoon, but the fire spread to two adjacent sheds, though lumber was saved, and rebuilding is expected.
A fire at a residence in Commerce Texas early this morning about 1 o clock damaged the property. A detective report notes cooking area and Hartford fire company responded. Insurance covered $700 with most furniture saved. flames spread to J De Galues residence causing further damage. home insured and furniture severely affected.
In Denieon Texas on July 2 a barn and carriage house belonging to Cash Anderson burned down last night. Estimated loss around $1700 with insurance coverage listed as $000.
State of Texas v Will Chapman continued in district court this morning on the State's request. Chapman faces rape charges. Bill Williams pled guilty to a charge described as vandalism and received two years in the penitentiary. The Honeycutt case was postponed to the sixth week. State witnesses have left the state and may delay further.
