Washington reports July 31 that Conger and others in Pekin are alive and may receive relief soon. Allied forces number about 95,000 to 158,000 and may push toward Pekin as diplomacy contemplates a direct line to Ministor Conger for updates.
John Clark Ridpeth, noted historian, died at Presbyterian Hospital in New York at 6:50 PM after a long illness. Born April 26, 1840 in Muttam County Indiana, he studied at Indiana Ashbury University 1803, taught at Baker University Kansas, and authored multiple histories and biographies. He supported the Democratic party and backed W. J. Bryan in 1896.
