A convent of Oxopa, already damaged by two fires blamed on incendiaries, was destroyed by a third blaze. Locals link the fires to American missionaries, sparking fanatic unrest. Government troops dispatched to restore order amid rising tensions.
A list of Texans registered in New York includes Austin Graham Carmine Calvert Perk Avenue and J. Welden of Manhattan with multiple addresses such as St George and Central, along with Mrs McGibbon and Mrs L H Morey. The notice also lists Dr Delaney and H Cohn among others. A separate entry notes Texas pensions granted including Joseph W Beeson of Deni ron with five dollars.
Americans, British and Japanese join in a large march toward the capital amid reports that about 30,000 men are available. The city reportedly lacks sufficient provisions to withstand a prolonged siege.
Washington reports an American commander received orders not to delay the Pekin offensive as reinforcements arrive daily. Chinese courier accounts from July describe troop movements between Pekin and Yangtaun, food shortages, and rumors of General Ma’s death. Secretary Root said no diplomatic changes would halt the march, and General Chaffee remains the commander.
The German foreign office expects the advance to proceed without commander in chief. More than 20,000 men and 2,640 officers have answered the call for Chinese service. Steps have been taken to prevent unauthorized publication of Emperor William's speeches. A Hong Kong letter dated July 24 says Li Hung Chang maintains order in Canton through terror. It claims he executed seventy in a week, and as viceroy as many as 2000 people were killed or jailed indiscriminately, including suspects and innocents.
Far East dispatches state Chinese forces engage Russian troops in territory adjacent to Port Arthur. Meade transports 1000 soldiers and $1,700,000 in war funds sail to Taku. Rome and Beijing visas overshadowed by diplomat tensions as Italian warship Elba reports British ministerial expulsion letters.
Despatch from Chae Foo dated July 31 reports heavy fighting in Peking with losses of sixty Americans killed and seventy wounded among allied troops while Chinese forces suffer over a thousand casualties. All legations except Britain are wrecked by shelling as Marines defend walls and Captain Myers leads a sortie against mounted troops.
The Chinese government urges protection for foreign ministers in Pekin. Li Hung Chang and others press for safe escort or open communications, with an imperial edict reportedly directing wires to foreign offices and ministers in London and Washington.
Dr Morrison accuses the Chinese government of infamy over Pekin while Times dispatches from London and Shanghai place blame on Chinese leadership. Reports describe imperial troops, relief efforts, and diplomatic exchanges with Britain and the United States as observers weigh possible war measures and China’s resistance.
August 1 report says Boers have evacuated Machadodoro and Lourenzo and are preparing to retreat toward Lydenburg. Telegraphic communications have been completed to the latter place as the force moves.
Surgeon General Sternberg reports a large sickness outbreak in the Ninth Infantry likely tied to severe service and exposure. He notes climate and water factors, and says fly nets would not be unusual. no pan epidemic is believed, per the officer in charge.
