The National Weather Service warns of continued rain chances in Arkansas through Thursday as southerly winds rise and temperatures warm. A frontal system is expected to move into the state by week’s end.
Hope Star reports a Thursday forecast for Arkansas showing partly cloudy skies with a chance of showers and thundershowers. Temperatures expected to remain near current levels with highs in the 80s and cooler overnight lows in the upper 60s.

Dr. David Thomas Hawkins, 26, a Paris dentist, was sentenced to 30 years for first-degree rape in Fort Smith. Circuit Judge Paul Wolfe suspended nine years if Hawkins enters a hospital on release after a no contest plea. The attack involved a Fort Smith woman last spring.
Winners in multiple divisions were announced Tuesday afternoon. Best of Show honors went to Helen Bittick for Path through the Wilderness quilt and Nona Church for a clay bust of her husband. A special commission was appointed by Robert W. Bass to resolve a property dispute involving the First Presbyterian Church of Paris Texas and other split churches. About 200 churches seek to leave the denomination, with 28 loyalists in Paris aiming to keep church property, and the panel heard related complaints across synods with no findings date set.

W A Tony Boyle former head of the United Mine Workers remains in a coma after an apparent suicide attempt on the eve of a court appearance on a murder conspiracy charge connected to the 1969 killings of Joseph Yablonski and his wife and daughter. Doctors said sodium amytal was involved and survival chances were poor. Boyle faced a removal hearing to move to Pennsylvania. the case had been postponed to Oct. 24.
Tom Anderson of Pigeon Forge Tennessee says he is still chairman of the American Party after a weekend Columbia South Carolina meeting elected William K Shearer of Lemon Grove California as successor. Anderson denounces the meeting as a rump session and asserts Wallace supporters remain loyal to the party but that Wallace left the party. A semiannual convention is planned in New Orleans on October 27 to discuss a proposed constitution. In Nebraska a law bans destroying nests of gang birds.
The Southeast Home Demonstration Club held a picnic at Hope City Park with barbecued chicken cake and cold drinks. Visitors Mrs Alma Knox and Mrs Fannie Alexander attended. a farewell party for Mr and Mrs John Homer Stroughter was hosted by Mrs Fannie Alexander on September 20. Guests included numerous friends and family from local households. The next meeting will be at Mrs Willie Malone's home. S.T. Keys and Mrs Minervia Snowden are listed as club officers and reporters. Calendar notes S.T. Boyd Consistory 201 will meet at Washington Masonic Hall at 7 30 p m Thursday. all princes invited.
Funeral services for Allen B. Erskine Sr. of Prescott were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Prescott First Baptist Church with Rev. Gene Stacks officiating. Burial followed in DeAnne cemetery under Cornish Mortuary. He died Monday in a Nevada County hospital and is survived by his wife Bertha, two sons Allen Jr. and Jerns, six daughters Iona Stankard Inez Whatley Margie Murphy Blendale Kerns Bobby Hesterly Betty Clark, a brother Andrew F. Erskine, 21 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
