The Associated Press reports a two day forecast of light rain or drizzle across Arkansas through Wednesday with no thunderstorms expected. Rain reports show Fayetteville at 0.04 inches, Harrison trace, and Little Rock trace in the 24 hour period ending at 7 a.m.
The Hope Star reports cold northeast winds and high pressure moving northeast, with highs in the 60s and overnight lows in the 40s to 50s across Arkansas. It lists city temperatures, a 24 hour experiment station report, staff credits, circulation notes, and subscription rates for carrier and mail delivery across Arkansas and nearby counties.
Athens reports the new Greek government lifts the ban on the Communist Party for the first time in 38 years and allows former military regime members to run in the anticipated November elections. Premier Caramanlis says it marks a crucial step toward democratic legality. Voting date to be announced, but expected by late November.
In Omaha a two month stay in a 12 year old battered school bus ended as Marion and Mrs. Roberts and their seven children moved into a three bedroom frame house after newspaper reports spurred offers. Rent is $100 monthly with work by Roberts accepted. The family will have school access once permanent address is established and the children attend Omaha Public Schools.
Charles Mitchell of the Arkansas Highway Department addressed the Hope Rotary Club at a luncheon, comparing the highway and circulator systems. He noted Arkansas has 16 000 miles of roads, 4 000 employees, and five commissioners with two year terms. The new Hope district headquarters was showcased, and a highway film highlighted tourist attractions in Southwest Arkansas. Don Williams introduced the speaker, with new member Kenneth Caery welcomed. Guests included Mike Hartsfield, Dwayne Stewart, Calvin Caldwell, and Earl Secrest of Flint, Michigan, a former Razorbacks captain. Capobianco named artistic director elect of the San Diego Opera, to take over after 1976-77 season.
Former Treasury Secretary John B. Connally asked the court to dismiss all charges tied to an alleged $10,000 payoff over a 1971 milk price supports increase. He and co defendants filed motions seeking either bribe perjury and conspiracy charges be thrown out or the trial moved to San Antonio near his cattle ranch.
Secretary of State Kissinger meets Greek and Turkish ministers at the United Nations as Cyprus tensions rise. Greece blames the United States for not preventing Turkey’s invasion. protests in Athens turn anti American with calls of murder. Turkish envoy counters Greek charges arguing Cyprus should be independent if desired. Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko also addresses the General Assembly.
Funeral services for Blant Jones, cattleman and Hope Livestock official, were held Tuesday in Herndon chapel. He died Sunday in Houston and is survived by Marie, two sons Ken and Phil, parents Loyd and Mrs. Jones, sister Mrs. Otto Allen, and four grandchildren. George Sandefur Brandon, 62, died September 22 in Eden, NC, a Fieldcrest Mills cotton classifier. Surviving Frances Snyder Brandon, Ford Brandon, Betsy Brandon, and Robert B. Brandon. services Friday at Herndon chapel, burial Rose Hill Cemetery. Hugh Palmore Dupuy, 69, died after a long illness in Hope. survived by Nita Dupuy, Gaylon Jones, Palmore R. Dupuy, and six grandchildren. Services at Oakcrest Chapel. Kirby Gleghorn, 57, died in Texarkana. funeral arrangements pending with Oakcrest Funeral Home.
