A 10 year old girl, abducted at knife point from her Detroit suburb home, was released unharmed about 90 minutes later on a rural Oakland County road. Police linked the incident to possible ransom but could not determine motive. names were withheld.

Jacqueline Susann dies at 53 after secret cancer battle
Author Jacqueline Susann died at Doctors Hospital at 53 after a seven week hospitalization for cancer. Known for Valley of the Dolls and The Love Machine, she kept illness private, with only her husband Irving Mansfield and a few friends aware of recurring disease and a Christmas 1962 mastectomy. Her novels spawned major film adaptations and she became the first author to have three consecutive No 1 bestsellers. Mansfield last spoke to her days before a coma.
