The National Weather Service says a cold front moved into Arkansas on Monday bringing cold dry air and a high pressure system that will slide through the state. Temperatures drop today but are expected to return to normal by Wednesday.
Hope Star reports afternoon readings across the region with highs reaching 82 in Pine Bluff and 81 in Little Rock while Fayetteville notes a 40 degree low. Forecast calls for fair, cold tonight and sunny, warmer conditions Wednesday with highs in the upper 60s to low 80s and lows in the low 40s to low 50s.

Funeral services were held for Mrs Gladys Pitkin at Buckner Methodist Church with burial in Buckner Cemetery. She died at 83 in a Stamps Arkansas nursing home. Survivors include two sons seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Nellie Duffer died at 73 in a Texarkana nursing home. She was a Bowie County resident and is survived by husband Ernest Duffer Sr a son a daughter two brothers three sisters and three grandchildren. Charley Lockard died at 50 in a local hospital. A Bruner Ivory employee and Mason, his funeral was held at Herndon Chapel and burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, two stepdaughters, a stepson, a brother, two sisters, and three grandchildren.
The United Nations General Assembly grants full membership to East and West Germany at its 28th session opening. Israel opposed East Germany over Nazi reparations, while the United States and allies dropped long-standing opposition after Berlin accords and the two Germanys normalization treaty.
Robin Moore of the Red River Regional Council on Alcoholism announced an October 20 workshop to train volunteers as facilitators for driver re education courses run with Judge John Wilson's court and the Red River Vocational School. The four week course meets Thursday evenings, with 23 students in the first session and a $25 fee. Rev. WG Wynn and Rev Wynn will assist in organizing and recruiting volunteers, aiming to teach non lecture methods and group facilitation to prevent drinking and driving in the community. Chrysler Corp and the United Auto Workers announced a three year contract ending the strike with a 14 hour weekly overtime cap and a 30 year retirement option with full pension. The deal includes wage increases of about five percent first year, three percent in years two and three, safer plant inspections, and an extra post Thanksgiving holiday. It aligns U.S. and Canadian pay but excludes white collar workers. The agreement requires ratification by the Chrysler Council and local unions.
