Fayetteville police say University of Arkansas coed Anita Sugg, 23, and her 85 year old landlady Pearl Ferguson died of asphyxia while sleeping. The coal furnace had been adjusted to burn gasoline, a valve stuck open, exhausting oxygen and causing fatal heat. The furnace thermostat showed 110 degrees at arrival.
Detroit AP report says the UAW Chrysler council will review a three year contract offering a three percent yearly wage rise plus 12 cents an hour first year, 17 percent higher cost of living protection, and improved pension terms as talks aim to end the strike and return about 112,000 production workers to work. The vote hinges on national approval and ratification by 69 Chrysler locals, with union leaders seeking to finish by week’s end.

Patricio Aylwin of Chile's Christian Democratic party claims President Allende intended a fake uprising to crush with armed supporters and establish Marxist rule after military leaders overthrew him on Sept. 11. He cites arms in a parallel militia and plans to assassinate generals and opposition leaders.
