Fishing Fine But Was Trip Worth It

Two Newark men John McGlary and Keith Oveson faced a dangerous Labor Day fishing trip near Madera in the San Joaquin River gorge. After camping on a sandbar, they could not climb 1000 foot cliffs or overcome the river’s current, triggering a rescue by forest rangers and Air Force specialists. A helicopter, ropes and rafts aided a Friday rescue as McGlary and Oveson were finally brought to safety.

Nuclear tests resume by the U S over Pacific

The United States cleared the way to resume atmospheric nuclear tests in the Pacific likely later this month or early October with preparations to reactivate the safety zone around Johnston Island on Sept. 22. Rescue by helicopter after raft ordeal near sandbar

Hot Springs delegates at the state Democratic convention will seek to remove elective titles from primary ballots and restore the preferential primary system. They argue titles are undemocratic and unfair, noting that the 1959 act ended the preferential primary, reducing interest in the general primary and harming Arkansas elections. Previously two candidate races went to the preferential ballot while two man races waited for a runoff.

Body found in Bull Shoals Lake near Harrison

The body of M. B. Rogers, 65, of Aurora Missouri, was recovered from Bull Shoals Lake 32 miles northeast of Harrison. He apparently fell from a boat while fishing after checking into a lodge for a three day trip. The lodge owner heard a scream Monday evening and found the drifting boat with gear inside. Police dragged the lake overnight and located the body at about 7 a.m.

The 35th annual Arkansas Telephone Association convention is underway in Hot Springs. Registration occurred Sunday and main speaker on Tuesday will be Tom Anderson, publisher of the Farm and Ranch Journal and the Arkansas Farmer.
