Faulkner County clerk L J Merritt said Guy Mutt Jones Sr of Conway was not restored to county voter rolls. Jones, convicted in 1972 of felony federal income tax charges, filed a voter registration card with a question mark where it asks about crime convictions.
The Center for National Policy Review at Catholic University charges HEW ignored evidence of widespread northern school segregation. In a 117 page study based on 84 districts and court-ordered data, 52 reviews remain open, with common violations including pupil assignment, minority hiring, class placement, and language support. Cities cited include Atlantic City, Hoboken, Passaic, South Bend, Fort Wayne, Toledo, Day ton, Utica, and Racine.
In Lexington surgeons report success saving a week-old one-pound infant born Aug. 19 at University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center. Lee Allen Bailey, son of Rainey Nora Bell Bailey of Ashland, survived a bowel obstruction after a three-hour operation on Aug. 28 using tiny instruments. He has doubled his birth weight and will need a final, simpler operation when he reaches four to five pounds.
State Rep. W H Thompson proposes a study to gauge the need and feasibility of statutory grievance procedures for public employees and employers. He remains opposed to public sector collective bargaining but pushes creating internal committees and a citizens advisory panel to aid the Arkansas Legislative Council in its study.
In Little Rock at 28 Mack McLarty, Pryor’s favored choice for governor, is the Democratic state chair prospect. Pryor, the gubernatorial nominee, would guide the selection under a new process via the Democratic State Committee. McLarty, campaign treasurer and partner in a Little Rock ad firm, says the chairmanship holds exciting national and state party potential. Mayor Dean Boswell of Bryant has also expressed interest while current chair Nancy Barton of Osceola holds the post after Bradley Jesson left to join Gov. Bumpers’ campaign.
In Boston a DC9 hijacker surrendered after an FBI agent spoke to him in his own language over a three hour negotiation. Marshall Collins III, 20, of Providence, was charged with air piracy after a flight from New York to Logan Airport where passengers evacuated. The pilot suffered superficial cuts from a blunt weapon, and Collins faced a $250,000 bond and a psychiatric exam.
A five-pound bag of sugar jumped from 8 cents last January to $2 today and government officials warn prices will climb further before stabilizing. The Agriculture Department cites high wholesale costs driving retail gains and notes sugar consumption remains strong at 108 pounds per person, with adequate supplies.
