Partly cloudy conditions across Arkansas with mild daytime temperatures and cool nights. The National Weather Service expects little or no precipitation Sunday through Tuesday as highs rise into the 80s and overnight lows near the 60s, amid a high pressure ridge.
The Hope Star reports mild temperatures in Arkansas with no rapid warming through Saturday and cloud cover in the southern river valley. Hurricane Carmen may bring cloudiness and rain to the state’s eastern gulf region. overnight lows ranged from 43 to 61 across several cities, with no rainfall in the 24 hours up to today’s 7 am.
Bony Hampton Peace Jr., 68, co founder of Multimedia Inc owners of newspapers radio and TV stations in several states died Thursday. U S intelligence says North Vietnam moved MIG fighters close to the South Vietnamese border marking the most active air threat yet. North Vietnamese surface to air missiles now extend across territory in South Vietnam, threatening any contesting jets. Reports place MIGs at Dong Hoi base about 30 miles north of the DMZ with continued activity since last month.
Shirley Cothran, 21, of Denton Texas wore a pink swimsuit with small holes and claimed the swimsuit title at the Miss America Pageant preliminaries in Atlantic City New Jersey. Miss Kentucky Darlene Compton won the talent award while Miss Kansas Karen Diane Smith and Miss Tennessee Deborah Humphreys Kincaid took swimsuit and talent awards respectively.
Rhonda Kaye Pope of Hot Springs wowed Atlantic City with a medley in the talent division while Miss Kentucky led prelims. Chaperone Ann Peyton praised Arkansas’s calm favorite as crowds cheered and shops echoed support.
Washington AP reports Senator J. W. Fulbright is Ford's expected pick for ambassador to Great Britain though he has not confirmed interest. Fulbright, 69, leads the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and is currently abroad with a delegation in China.
Gov. Dale Bumpers praised Sen. J. W. Fulbright as eminently qualified for the post and said it would be a great honor for Arkansas if he were appointed ambassador to Great Britain. Fulbright, 69, ends his 30 year Senate career in January after Ford offered the position. European officials and key Republicans reportedly approved the nomination.
