The National Weather Service forecasts sunny skies and mild temperatures today and Thursday with fair skies and cool temperatures tonight. Skies cleared across northwest Arkansas Tuesday as a cool north wind lowered temperatures.
Hope Star reports cooling across Arkansas with highs in the 60s to 70s and a trend of little rain through Friday. The storm track shows 65 at Harrison to 75 in Little Rock, with overnight lows near 50. Local rainfall: Little Rock 0.02, Pine Bluff 0.01, El Dorado 0.01. Weather notes include a record low near 52 at Little Rock.
A federal judge issued a permanent order halting production and sale of the unbranded hazardous trouble light from A K Electric Corp and 36 distributors. The court rejected a demand for paid ads, citing extensive news coverage that highlighted the electrocution risk and tied to a Florida death last fall.
Lester Maddox, 59, a longtime segregationist symbol, loses the Georgia Democratic runoff to state Rep. George Busbee, 47, supported by Julian Bond and party moderates. Busbee vows four years of stable government as Maddox concedes amid a day of statewide primaries including North Dakota and Nevada contests.
Tropical storm Carmen was forecast to regain hurricane strength as it drifts west over the Gulf of Campeche. Winds near 60 mph, with experts noting it could become a hurricane again. no Texas impact expected. A second disturbance northwest of Bermuda could become Dolly, with warnings issued from Cape Hatteras.
Agriculture Secretary Earl J. Butz told an audience in Washington that nations should spend more time planning to produce more food than managing stockpiles. He pledged U S humanitarian relief regardless of reserves, called for coordinated reserves, and urged importing countries to build their own stocks while criticizing apocalyptic hunger scenarios as unfounded. He spoke ahead of the Rome World Food Conference starting November 5.
Fred O. Ellis Jr. has learned he passed the Arkansas Bar examination. He also took the Tennessee Bar exam, with results due in October. Ellis, son of Fred and Mrs. Ellis of Hope, is a recent Vanderbilt University Law School graduate.
Mrs. Fannie Arnold age 89 of Texarkana died in a local hospital on Wednesday. She leaves husband L D Arnold Sr and children L D Jr Doyle Harlin Eunice Jewel Alma Nell plus other relatives. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday Providence Baptist Church burial New Hope Cemetery Herndon Funeral Home in charge. Also funeral for Mrs Erna Harris 65 held at Latimer Nashville with burial Sardis cemetery. She leaves two sons one daughter five grandchildren a nephew and a brother-in-law.

Health council in Magnolia reviews a capitol expenditures grant for Nashville nursing home expansion by 25 beds. A benefit show at Bodcan gym aids the Butler family with hospital costs. Centennial Teens elected Johnny Vickers and Ann Thrash as lieutenants to organize next year’s Centennial activities. Kiwanis pancake supper at Hope High School Friday 5 to 7:30 supports youth and elderly programs. Fair queen and Little Miss Hempstead County contests Sept 10 at Red River Vo-Tech. winners advance to Sept 23 district show. Bellman of the Year name changed to Bellman-Bellwoman of the Year by the American Hotel and Motel Assn.
Conway Senator Mutt Jones refused to answer if he will resign from the 21st District, saying he faces serious problems and must consider what is right and lawful. He indicated he cannot guarantee the district a senator, given his own uncertainties and the people he must help.
Kiwanis club meeting at Town and Country restaurant had no guest speaker due to scheduling confusion. President-elect Rufus Herdon announced committee chairs for the year starting October 1, led by Bob Willis with programs led by Roy Taylor and other chairs across three general groups. run-off directors include Wayne Shaw and others, with Sherman Williams of Arkadelphia as the sole guest.
Chad White filed petitions in Magnolia to place a local option question on the November 5 ballot allowing alcoholic beverage sales in Columbia County. About 2,350 signatures were gathered. roughly 1,700 valid signatures are needed. County Clerk Nell Smith will certify signatures over about a week. Columbia County remains dry.
