Ethiopia's military rulers sent riot police into Addis Ababa after demonstrations against Emperor Haile Selassie. Students at the national university shouted Hang Haile Selassie while unemployed youths blamed the 82 year old ruler for famine and joblessness. The Armed Forces Committee welcomed public support but banned demonstrations for safety. Posters depicted the emperor with his dogs beside famine victims. Thousands have died from malnutrition in three years.
The Centennial Teens formed group of 25 boys and 25 girls elected Johnny Vickers lieutenant and Ann Thrash lieutenant in charge. Girls wear long dresses with white bonnets and parasols while boys wear green vests white shirts red and black garters black hats and pants. They will assist the Belles and Beaux in centennial activities.
Hurricane Carmen slowed as it crossed the Yucatan peninsula and moved into the Gulf of Mexico, with three deaths reported in its path. Forecasters predicted further weakening before regaining strength over open water, while heavy rains and floods affected the region and officials warned of potential future threats once over the Gulf.
Judy Neuffer, a 25 year old lieutenant from Wooster Ohio, became the first woman pilot in naval history to fly into a hurricane eye during a weather reconnaissance mission in a Navy P3 aircraft. Cmdr Dick Sirch supported her as the crew briefed her on expectations. Neuffer, in the Navy four years after Ohio State, pursued weather work and joined flight training when the program opened to women.

In Newark New Jersey a two day rampage by Puerto Ricans over alleged police brutality ended with scattered minor vandalism at Columbus Homes and calls for residents to stay indoors. Police cleared Broad Street as two men were shot at a Puerto Rican picnic and several fires were started including a fire bomb at a convent.
Washington AP reports President Ford marshaling forces to attack the cost of living surge. He plans a September 27 28 inflation conference with economists and leaders. Meany lauds his frank approach and urges clear honesty on inflation unemployment and recession. Miller of United Mine Workers backs the conference as Ford and 200 others witness enactment of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.
Lloyds Bank of London reported a loss up to 78.2 million dollars from Swiss currency transactions. The bank blamed the Lugano branch manager and an assistant in foreign exchange, saying tax offsets and insurance could cut the loss to about 44.4 million. Swiss authorities probe potential criminality as central bankers press for tighter FX controls amid volatile markets and calls for reimposed fixed exchange rates.
Democratic leaders push national health insurance and tax reform as key aims in the closing weeks of the 93rd Congress. With elections looming, prospects for action fade as lawmakers anticipate adjournment before November 5.
The Arkansas Highway Department will dedicate the new District 3 headquarters on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Rep. Larry Patterson will MC, with dedicatory remarks by James A. The grey brick building, finished last month, cost 1,213,654 dollars and sits on Highway 29 north within city limits.
Gen Anastasio Somoza led in early returns from the Nicaragua presidential vote with 60,907 to 3,080 for Edmundo Paguaga of the Conservative party. Complete results were not due for another week as Somoza, 38, ahead in a 20 to 1 margin, appeared set to extend his family’s long rule.
