The Associated Press reports a weather reprieve for Arkansas with showers and a few thunderstorms ending in the western half today and in the eastern half tonight. Rainfall totals over the prior 24 hours include 2.05 inches at Little Rock and 1.73 inches at another station.
The Hope Star weather forecast notes a moving low pressure trough bringing showers to western Arkansas by Wednesday and a weekend mix of rain and thunderstorms. Hope High School faculty will meet Wednesday at 2 p.m. to officially begin the North Central Re-Evaluation Self-Study. Arkansas education official Jimmy Albright will discuss the process. All Hope schools dismiss at 1:30 p.m. and hold afternoon faculty meetings while remaining on regular schedules for the week.
All Around Town notes the Third District Livestock Show Association will hold a board meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Commons Room at Red River Vo-Tech with dinner served. Marine Pvt Artis B Butler of Stamps graduated from a basic warehousing course at Camp Pendleton. Sweethome Stone Company of Prescott plans a new building on Highway 67 north with offices bays and a garage. Hope High School names Becky Garrett Homecoming Queen. her mother also held the honor in 1949. Lt Col Franklin Horton, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Horton, promoted after graduating Quachita Baptist University. Rev Ernest Risley, former rector of St Johns Church Savannah, died at 69 after leaving the Episcopal priesthood in 1965 over desegregation policy.
Smackover Producing Co. of El Dorado and partner James Matheny were fined 1200 dollars in Municipal Court for discharging salt water and oil from Champagnolle Field. Charges, filed May 14 by the Arkansas Department of Pollution Control and Ecology, carry potential daily fines up to 5000 dollars. J W Floyd reported the polluting discharges.
