Cotton Still Held at Nine Cents as Farmers Defend Prices

Cotton farmers in the Spartanburg and Charlotte area refuse to sell while prices hover around 6.36 to 9 cents a pound. A nine cent target is reported as the directive for 90 percent of holders. The movement keeps cotton on skids in front of homes, with minimal cash outlay since 1889. Some doubt strong price advances without pressure, yet current levels remain well above production costs, aided by cautious speculative demand amid market jitters before a national election.
