The National Weather Service says gradual clearing is expected as a cold front moves southeastward through the state. Occasional rain or showers should end with the front and clearing skies behind it.

A U S Air Force aircraft hunts through the night for a weather reconnaissance plane missing with its six crew near Manila as a tropical storm closes in. The search focuses on locating the crew and aircraft and assessing risks from the oncoming storm.

Laura Martin of Citizens National Bank of Hope is named campaign treasurer for the 1974 March Against Dystrophy. The Arkansas Chapter of Muscular Dystrophy Associations of America announced the appointment. The door to door appeal is set for Sunday October 20, 1974. Local fundraising supports medical research clinics orthopedic devices and summer camps provided at no cost.
The Arkansas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service forecast 1974 soybean production at 90.3 million bushels, a 22 percent drop from 1973, while cotton, rice and sorghum grain are seen higher. Cotton production may reach 1.3 million bales, up 25 percent. yield 471 pounds per acre, down 6 percent. Rice is put at 134.56 million hundredweight, up 36 percent, with per acre yield near 4,800 hundredweight. Sorghum grain expected at 6.72 million bushels, up from 1973.
