The National Weather Service warns of thunderstorms and locally heavy rains in northwest Arkansas as a squall line moves eastward across the state. Severe weather is expected in the affected region tonight.
Up to three inches of rain can be expected in portions of the state tonight. The rain will spread over the entire state by Friday with cooler weekend temperatures and lows in the upper 50s to low 60s and highs mainly in the 70s. State highs included 89 at Texarkana and 88 at Pine Bluff El Dorado. Lows ranged from 60 at Jonesboro to 75 at El Dorado Texarkana.
Experiment station report for 24 hours ending 7 a.m. Thursday notes a high of 88 and a low of 70 with showers expected. State forecast for Arkansas calls for showers and cooler conditions through Friday with highs in the mid 70s to mid 80s and lows in the 60s.

At the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Cuba’s Raul Roa and aides tried to storm the rostrum to assault Chilean Ambassador Raul Bazan. U.N. guards halted the attack as Nicaraguan, Paraguayan, Uruguayan, Bolivian, and Chilean delegates shouted back. Roa claimed the slapping gesture was meant to deliver a needed rebuke.

Washington officials say the United States is laying groundwork for a major resupply effort to Israel if heavy losses continue in the war with Syria and Egypt, while pursuing a ceasefire and a framework for a lasting settlement. A Boeing 707 with Israeli markings was loaded with airto air missiles at Oceana Naval Air Station as part of a patchwork resupply effort.
The Hope School District 1A board approved buying five old houses and nearby property near Verger Junior High. They also advanced an Emergency School Assistance Program funding request for 1974 75 and studied relocating the high school library to align with North Central Association guidelines. A long range Ten year building program was discussed, with Phase I renovations starting 1974 at Brookwood, Garland and others, Phase II converting several schools to neighborhood and intermediate grades, and a new secondary facility planned. The board adopted a tax in lieu of tax policy under Act 9 for industries, set up a textbook committee for elementary reading, and reviewed September expenditures and current financials.
In Marked Tree Arkansas a Frisco Railway freight derailed about 10 am damaging a depot and nearby buildings. Naptha and liquid propane cars ignited with no injuries reported. Firemen battled flames, shoppers were ordered away, and four schools dismissed as recalls and evacuations followed.
The text releases Spiro T. Agnew’s formal resignation to Secretary Kissinger effective immediately on Oct 10 1973. In his advisory note to President Nixon he cites the national interest and avoidance of a protracted battle. Nixon replies expressing personal loss and respect for Agnew’s decision and service.
