The Associated Press reports no precipitation through Sunday in Arkansas with a shift to colder air from the north by weekend. The National Weather Service says Arkansas will have partly cloudy skies through Thursday with daytime temperatures...
The Hope Star reports cooler temperatures with fog across Arkansas overnight. Weather maps show building high pressure over the plains with no new systems for the next few days. Overnight lows range from 39 to 56, with station data noting a 67 high and 50 low and light precipitation.
A weekly Agriculture Department weather report says killing frosts have reached deeper into damaged corn and soybean fields. As of last Sunday the cold weather nipped crops as far south as Arkansas Tennessee northern Georgia and South Carolina. The report notes frost killed remaining Southern Belt crop acreage and wider soybean damage across the Corn Belt.
Lola Creswell, 56, former administrator of Newport Hospital and Clinic, charged with conspiracy in what a government attorney calls the most flagrant and largest Medicare fraud in the Eastern District of Arkansas. Creswell pleaded innocent, with the federal complaint alleging fraudulent reports on hospital expenses that led to Medicare reimbursements.
The Independent Pallet Growers Association meets Thursday October 10 at 7 30 in the Farm Bureau Conference Room with all growers urged to attend. Obituary notices for Mrs. Josie McKinnon and Robert Don Cox, plus funeral details for Charles Tony McCants. McKinnon survived by two sons, siblings, and grandchildren. services at Oakcrest Chapel with interment at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Cox, Exxon Oil employee, mourned by wife and two daughters, with Mt. Nebo graveside service. McCants, six month old, to be laid to rest at East Memorial Gardens in Texarkana.
Harold Eakley of Hope Wire Products spoke to the Hope Rotary Club about founding in Holland Michigan in 1947 and the local outlet opening in 1958. He joined the firm in 1949 and praised the local staff. He demonstrated springs used in a hospital mattress set. The Federal government is a major market for the product. Gerald Keith welcomed student guests Paul Williams and Bobby Scott of the Hope High FFA.
Altenbaumer, former Arkansas Republican official and bank director, started a 90 day stay at the U S Bureau of Prisons Medical Center in Springfield to determine his fitness for serving a six month term. He pleaded guilty to misapplication charges and was sentenced by Judge Oren Harris, who earlier suspended half a year and fined him $1,000.
Dr. Harvie Ellis told the Kiwanis Club at Town and Country Restaurant that Arkansas has 60 reported rabies cases this year, with likely 40 unreported and 1,500 animal bites plus 13,500 unreported bites. He urged registration of pets, yard restraints, vaccination, and elimination of rabid animals, noting a recent decline due to control programs. Regan Cornelius attended as a guest.
Dr. Don W. Freel of Hope was named to the Local Arrangements Committee for the 78th Annual American Optometric Association Congress set for June 16 to 21 in Hot Springs Arkansas. Appointed by AOA president Dr. Bernard J. Shannon, Freel will assist Local Arrangements chairman Dr. Erwin Lax of Hot Springs in planning at the Arlington Hotel for the first AOA Congress held in Arkansas, drawing optometrists nationwide.
Seven persons escaped injury when a 25 foot boat named the Proud Mary sank in the Mississippi River near St Francisville Louisiana after two explosions set it on fire. The vessel was en route from Peoria Illinois to New Orleans. Occupants abandoned ship to a life raft and were rescued by fishermen. On board were Larry Gorney of New Orleans owner Mr and Mrs John E Hall Huntsville Alabama Mr and Mrs Richard J Jones Champaign Illinois Gene Ferell and Mrs C J Taylor Mattoon Illinois.
