Frost damages Southern Crops

A weekly Agriculture Department weather report says killing frosts have reached deeper into damaged corn and soybean fields. As of last Sunday the cold weather nipped crops as far south as Arkansas Tennessee northern Georgia and South Carolina. The report notes frost killed remaining Southern Belt crop acreage and wider soybean damage across the Corn Belt.

Medicare fraud complaint filed in Arkansas case

Lola Creswell, 56, former administrator of Newport Hospital and Clinic, charged with conspiracy in what a government attorney calls the most flagrant and largest Medicare fraud in the Eastern District of Arkansas. Creswell pleaded innocent, with the federal complaint alleging fraudulent reports on hospital expenses that led to Medicare reimbursements.

Altenbaumer begins six month prison term in Springfield

Altenbaumer, former Arkansas Republican official and bank director, started a 90 day stay at the U S Bureau of Prisons Medical Center in Springfield to determine his fitness for serving a six month term. He pleaded guilty to misapplication charges and was sentenced by Judge Oren Harris, who earlier suspended half a year and fined him $1,000.

Rabies Control Plan Proposed By Arkansas Public Health Veterinarian

Dr. Harvie Ellis told the Kiwanis Club at Town and Country Restaurant that Arkansas has 60 reported rabies cases this year, with likely 40 unreported and 1,500 animal bites plus 13,500 unreported bites. Seven escape sinking boat on Mississippi River near St Francisville

Seven persons escaped injury when a 25 foot boat named the Proud Mary sank in the Mississippi River near St Francisville Louisiana after two explosions set it on fire. The vessel was en route from Peoria Illinois to New Orleans. Occupants abandoned ship to a life raft and were rescued by fishermen.
