Mexico City officials said extra police patrolled the capital on the first anniversary of the October 2, 1968 clash between the army and students at Culture Plaza. The night saw no public demonstrations though the confrontation began in the evening and ended with 35 dead, including soldiers.

The Poinsett County Grand Jury heard about 15 witnesses as it probes the death of Marle Morgan, 39, of near Harrisburg, who died Sept 2 in the county jail after being arrested Sept 1 by State Trooper Joe Martzar. The probe, rescheduled to secure key witnesses, also involves the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division and the FBI. Morgan’s parents requested the inquiry, and his 16-year-old nephew Glenn Barnes was also taken into custody.
President Nixon signed an executive order creating an emergency board to study the rail wage dispute involving six rail lines and the National Railway Labor Conference. The board will report after 30 days, with 30 more days for bargaining, aiming to prevent a nationwide shutdown.

The International Monetary Fund introduces paper gold or SDRs as international money backed by nations' acceptance, with 74 countries on board. About 9.5 billion SDRs to be distributed over three years, led by quotas of the United States and major economies. The plan places major nations with larger quotas to receive more SDRs and influence decisions, with allocations starting in 1971 and continuing into 1972. In Paris talks, officials reviewed the mechanism as South Africa's stance remains uncertain.
A truck carrying 12,000 pounds of eggs overturned yesterday on Highway 29 near the DeAnn turnoff, blocking traffic for about 30 minutes. Driver Nelson Caldwell was uninjured. the truck was owned by Guy Bobo. State Patrolman Wallace Martin reports.

The Senate GOP’s George Aiken said Nixon might consider withdrawing Clement Haynsworth’s Supreme Court nomination if 30 to 40 senators oppose it. Haynsworth denied seeking withdrawal, while White House sources stood by reports of mounting opposition, as others urged withdrawal or defended the judge.
PINE BLUFF Arkansas AP unions for Cotton Belt and Missouri Pacific railways announce stoppages at 1230 a m Saturday if a one day strike begins. National Railway labor Conference posted notices while IAM AIW Sheetmetal Workers and IBBIEA have called strikes against seven railroads. William W Wintisinger, chief negotiator for the unions, confirms plans to proceed.
