Economist warns on future farm programs and price supports
Washington AP The Agriculture Department's retiring senior economist Don Paarlberg warned that farmers and consumers could suffer if Carter's administration and Congress fail to design careful new wheat and corn programs next year. He urged staying market oriented to avoid artificial high prices and costly surpluses while criticizing large grain reserves. Paarlberg noted existing laws can insure ample stockpiles and expressed caution about pledges to raise price supports. He plans to return to Purdue in January after decades at USDA.
