Patrolman Wounded in North Little Rock Burglary Probe

Monte E. Montgomery, 31, off duty North Little Rock police officer, was shot and wounded after surprising a young man attempting to burglarize a vacant house owned by the officer’s father. He was listed in good condition after surgery at North Little Rock Memorial Hospital. he was unarmed and in civilian clothes.

At the Hope Rotary Club luncheon on Friday November 1 Gilbert Travis general manager of Edward Hines Lumber Company spoke about his background and gave a history of the firm founded in 1892 with Chicago headquarters The Hope Division of Edward Hines Lumber of Arkansas produces 110000 board feet daily employs 58 locally and has a $500000 annual payroll An extra 25 woods workers support local engagement Gerald Keith welcomed visitors including Frank Key George Jordan Judge Wilson and several others The club also sang Happy Birthday to Guy Basye and other members.

Woman dies from infection believed to be brown recluse bite

A Little Rock physician said Sue Joyce Bishop Helms, 44, died from an infection linked to a leg bite, possibly from a brown recluse spider. Helms, admitted Friday with blood poisoning and a 104 degree fever, died after 12 to 14 hours in shock despite massive treatments. The bite, four or five days prior, was not seen by the patient who suspected a mosquito bite.

Tire retreads ease disposal problem

Washington AP reports that over 200 million tire casings are discarded yearly in the United States. Retreading tires saves crude oil by using seven gallons to produce a new tire compared with 232 gallons for a new tire, and more than 40 million retreads sold in 1973 saved hundreds of millions of gallons of oil.

Funeral for Mrs. Lillie Pearson in Prescott

Mrs. Lillie Pearson aged 85 of Prescott died at home Sunday. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Prescott with Rev. Charles Walthall officiating. Burial followed in DeAnn Cemetery. Survivors include her husband A E Pearson two sons A E Pearson Jr and R J Pearson three daughters J T Easterling Al Daniels and W H Matthews a brother H M Burns a sister Mrs J A Reeves and 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral conducted by Cornish Funeral Service.

Fulbright in hospital after corrective surgery

Senator J W Fulbright of Arkansas underwent minor corrective surgery at Bethesda Naval Medical Center on Monday. His office said the procedure was successful and that he is in good condition and likely to leave the hospital within a week.
