The National Weather Service forecasts rain ending from the northwest across Arkansas tonight. Showers and thunderstorms are likely statewide with locally heavy rains in the central and northeast. A flash flood watch remains in effect for the central and northeast portions as cooler temperatures follow.
The Hope Star reports cooler weather with a cold front tracked across the state bringing widespread precipitation. Forecasts call for showers northeast Wednesday and little rain through Friday with high temperatures in the 50s to 70s and overnight lows near 40 to 50.
An explosion at Mohawk Tire and Rubber Co. in West Helena Sunday night prompted an investigation into the cause. Plant manager Richard Gibson said workers were near the blast, but no serious injuries occurred. Most of the plant was damaged and most employees would not work Monday.
About one hundred contestants paraded the Village Shopping Center sidewalks for Halloween Spookarama. Spooks ranged from three months to over 30 years with an eight foot monster surprise. Winners included Mike Arnold in Senior High window painting and Scott Patton in Junior High.
The Hope Leo Club officially organized September 17, 1974, at the Douglas building in Hope with 37 members. Dianne Croom as charter president, Gay O’Leen secretary, Anita Hoggard treasurer, and Pam Gunter as treasurer. Board members include Mark Harris Bobby Frazier Mick McCormack and Der Steel. The club plans extend to November 3 at the Holiday Inn area as a charter presentation. The Leo Club aims to develop leadership through community service for young people and is the third such club in Arkansas.
Marine PFC Jerry Sims, son of Earnest Sims Sr., 203 Lowe Ave, Stamps Arkansas, completed the basic warehousing course at Camp Lejeune. He learned receipt storage issue maintenance sale and prep for shipment of supplies. A 1974 Stamps High School graduate, he joined the Marines in January 1974 in Hope Shop.
Obituary notices report funeral services for Jim L. Brown 72 struck and killed on Highway 67 West near the weight station. Surviving family members include Bertha Brown and several children. Additional obituaries note John Tunce Walton 83 died in Fullerton Calif and Hazel Murry 68 of Prescott, with services and survivors listed. Also names Joseph W. Reap 60 deputy press officer and John J Fein 69 retired editor with brief career summaries.
