Use of Bank Credit Cards Shows Steady Increase
A government report shows a rapid rise in bank credit card use and related instant money plans at national banks. By end of 1971 consumers owed about 4.1 billion on these lines, up from 3.5 billion a year earlier, with 701 banks offering instant money and 740 issuing cards. The report highlights a shift toward a cashless society and notes saturation may be near as banks adjust offerings. The data also cover average balances and accounts under credit card and revolving plans.
