In Little Rock the Young Republicans League urged Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller to seek a third term. The group also pressed for legalizing abortion marijuana and gambling. Delegations from Shorter College and AME&N College urged more black involvement in the convention and called for Negroes to be nominated for league offices, not only during election years.
Homer C. Kennedy a 63 year old Hope plumber led petitions with more than 50 signatures of qualified voters. He accused City Manager Medders and Mayor Douglas of lacking real power while calling the board puppets and the mayor a figurehead. Kennedy criticized city staffing and questioned police leadership.
Vice President Spiro Agnew defended antiwar demonstrators near the White House saying many students were participating in a spring lark and that opposition to Cambodia was not deeply rooted. Senator J. William Fulbright criticized Agnew as myopic, urging deeper understanding of campus hostility and policy.
Ozark area officials hold a Webb City suspect in the fatal shooting of Raymond Harris a 40 year old man from Quark. Harris died from a shotgun blast following an argument at Webb City south of Ozark with a man involved in the dispute.
President Joaquin Balaguer captured a large share of votes in the Dominican Republic election over the weekend. Final unofficial returns show Balaguer at 607,717 with opposition figures Lora 240,557 Wessin y Wesin 153,591 Moreno Martinez 58,949 and Fernandez 51,039. turnout hovered above 1.1 million, well below the 1966 level and far from the government’s 1.5 million forecast.
An FAA official said the Nashville crash of a single engine Cessna 140 killed five people. The plane owned by National Aircraft Enterprise had wing repairs prior to the flight. Victims identified: Ben Lindsey 40 pilot, Joe Capps 26, Mrs Dolphina Youngblood 32 of Nashville and Mr and Mrs Leslie Ulrich of Broken Bow Oklahoma.
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS reports seven people died in Arkansas on Saturday as cars and tractors crashed across the state. Victims include Walter D. Rhoads 29 Little Rock who wrecked on I-30 near the Pulaski-Saline line and Amanda Westbrook 87 North Little Rock who was struck walking into a car’s path. Other fatalities involve Nelda Montgomery 25 Cash Carolyn M. Johnson 18 Archyrd Mo Aone Sanderland Crwmrad Leon Carter Batesville and Della Southerland 75 Camp Fulton County.
During Armed Forces Day open house at Little Rock Air Force Base youths were evicted for distributing antiwar literature. A spokesman said the youths were not identified and no arrests were made.
Authorities report a quiet night after a racial disturbance in Hot Springs. A 28 year old Black man, Carl E. Walker, was shot during a liquor store robbery attempt by a white store owner. Rocks were thrown at motorists and shop windows broken amid cross burning near West Mountain. The incident followed a black teens party sponsored by a civil rights group.
One of the nation's real pro emcees P D Pedie Gathright of Little Rock will host the Southwest Arkansas Poultry Festival in Nashville on Saturday May 23. General Chairman Earl Whitaker says Gathright’s return boosts the pageant. About 25 poultry contestants seek four finalist spots at the auditorium Saturday night. Entertainment features the Campbell Sisters Barbara and Sandy with a four piece band. The Campbell sisters have appeared on TV shows and touring events including Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour.
AP dispatch from BASE AREA 351 Cambodia reports the rapid Allied thrust into Cambodia losing momentum due to three factors. North Vietnamese counters, approaching monsoon with fog and rain, and orders to clear enemy caches slowing operations. Col. Carter W. Clarke notes six hours of work daily amid weather. Israeli jets struck targets in the Jordan Valley amid air and ground exchanges. A downed Israeli plane crashed in occupied territory after a raid involving more than 10 aircraft. Artillery and mortar fire erupted along the Jordan River and Suez area with no confirmed casualties.
A fire at the Southern Petroleum Co. warehouse in West Memphis, Arkansas, caused over $500,000 in damage. The blaze, visible from downtown Memphis across the river, involved tanks of alcohol and other flammable materials, with explosions hindering firefighting efforts from three states. Water from the Mississippi River was used to cool and control the fire, which remained smoldering late Sunday.
All Around Town Las Puytell received special recognition at a VIP training session May 19 at Holiday Inn Texaykana. She has 20 years with Beauty Counselor and was promoted to Unit Advisor after outstanding sales and recruiting efforts. Faye Mahone, District Distributor for Aprila-Tex, presented a billfold. The week also notes a Texaykana lodge meeting May 19 at 7:30 p.m. and police reports of seven traffic arrests.
Nationwide campus quieted over the weekend while security eased at several schools that faced violence. About a dozen colleges remained closed. At the University of Maryland 65 were arrested last week and $26,000 in damage reported. University of Cincinnati directors voted to stay closed for safety and property with plans to reopen for a summer session. In Jackson Mississippi mourners attended memorial services for two students killed in a police shooting, as the Jackson State College campus prepared for two weeks left in the term. The Black Student Union at the University of Utah planned a memorial service and a scholarship fund. California colleges were reported reeling as campuses stayed closed.
Arkansas State Police report 34 traffic fatalities in April across 28 fatal crashes. Hope District Captain Milton Mosier notes 80 day toll at its lowest since 1961 with Hempstead County leading in accidents at 19, followed by Columbia 17 and Clark 14. Speed and careless driving cited as top causes.
