The Associated Press reports showers and a few thunderstorms spreading across the state with the northern half most affected. A weak high pressure ridge supplies moisture for the activity after Wednesday's severe weather with numerous hail reports.
A tornado was sighted Wednesday afternoon over eastern North Little Rock as radar indicated funnel clouds. Hail the size of hen eggs fell near Holland, with golf ball sized hail south of Marianna and heavy hail on ground near Macon. Temperatures were in the 70s to 80s with varying overnight lows, and rainfall totals included 1.74 inches in Jonesboro.
Bonn Germany AP Finance Minister Helmut Schmidt won final party approval to become chancellor candidate after Willy Brandt resigned over a spy scandal. Schmidt had been backed by the Social Democratic ruling body and will head talks with the Free Democrats to form a new government. Brandt said his resignation stemmed from fear the East German spy on his staff could destabilize life.
Twenty finalists from four elementary schools will race in a bicycle rodeo Saturday May 11 at 9 a.m. on the northside lot of T. G. and Y. Five events Teeter Board Zig Zag Obstacle Course Slow Ride and Intersection. The top rider wins a gold trophy sponsored by Safe Lock and Key Company.
Former Gov Orval Faubus accused two ex supporters W R Witt Stephens and John A Cooper of ingratitude for backing David Pryor in the Arkansas gubernatorial primary. He questioned Pryor’s ties to industrial interests and gas rate disputes with Arkla. Faubus also sent a congratulatory telegram to Gov George Wallace of Alabama.
Heb Tolleson of Standard Auto Components earns Who's Who in Arkansas 1974 recognition for business and civic achievement. Nearby, Charles Adair joins the local police, Reid Clark attends FBI Academy in Quantico, and Patrolman Dennis Jones studies at the Arkansas Law Enforcement Academy. J W Secrest reports his 16 beehives around Hope and notes a relative who once served as a Hope Star carrier.
