The National Weather Service expects a wet weekend in Arkansas with periods of showers and scattered thundershowers. A near stationary front sits across the state, bringing rain through tonight and likely continuing Saturday and Sunday, with improvement Monday.
Severe weather moved through Arkansas with a tornado watch issued for much of North Arkansas. A tornado was reported at Bentonville around 1:20 pm, damaging a mobile home, two chicken houses, and three law enforcement vehicles with no injuries reported. Highs ranged from 65 to 87 across the state. overnight lows mostly in the 60s. Rainfall totals included 1.62 inches at Harrison and 0.25 at Fayetteville.
A partially garbled late night police report states the fifth body of drowning victims from the Arkansas River near Bere Monchoy was found near Arkadelphia. Officials note rescue units and air resources were deployed to assist in the search and recovery.
Bertha McEwin Whitson 90 of Little Rock former Hope resident died in a Little Rock hospital. Widow of James Penn Whitson born Caviness Texas daughter of John A. and Etta Chick McEwin. Survived by daughter Mrs Ralph Buckman four brothers nine nephews. Funeral 4 30 p m Saturday Ruebel Chapel Little Rock with Rev 0 D Peters. burial Roselawn Memorial Park. In Hot Springs the Business Council's off the record session found most top executives believe Nixon’s chances suffered due to Watergate transcripts. They expect impeachment but many doubt a Senate trial outcome, and only a few urged resignation. Names include Gerstenberg, Kaiser, Miller, Kendall, Packard.
A small tornado touched down on U S 7 about three miles north of Bentonville Thursday afternoon, damaging a mobile home two chicken houses and three law enforcement vehicles. No injuries were reported and investigators described minor damage to a state police unit and sheriff's vehicles as deputies and troopers worked the scene.
A governor advisory panel approved a landfill and loading dock at Pine Bluff port. Cerro Corp of New York was to locate a $73 million copper smelter and refinery at the site, but the panel’s approval covered only the landfill and loading dock not the copper processing plant construction.
The Anha P. Strong Club hosted a Variety Talent Style Show and Baby Contest at Southside Child Development Center on May 5 to raise funds for a Recreational Center for area youth. Nine babies entered. top scorers won bonds and cash, with all contestants raising over 100 dollars for the cause totaling 1,957.13.
Joseph P. Sullivan of Esmark Inc. Estech reports nine month fertilizer production up 8 percent while usage climbs 14 percent. Stocks down to 47 percent below last year as farmers rush planting. Nitrogen, phosphate, and potash supplies remain tight though some states ease. USDA notes slight improvement. phosphorus and potash shortages drop modestly. Imports up 17.2 percent through March, exports up 6.3 percent. Deaths from lung cancer set to rise to 75,000 in 1974.
Thursday sale reports estimated receipts 250 with 701 last week. Slaughter cows steady to strong, bulls 0.50 to 1.75 lower. feeders steady to 1.00 higher. Notes include 300-500 lb feeder cattle, cow and bull mix, and package springing heifers. Prices listed for cows, bulls, steers and heifers across weight groups.
