No Discount for Sales Tax Collection in Arkansas

Gov. Dale Bumpers backed by a consent of the legislature killed an administration bill to cut the merchant’s discount on sales tax collection. The Senate recalled the measure, excised a House amendment, and defeated the bill 329. Sen. Olen Hendrix defended the roll call to avoid accountability while Sen. Virgil Fletcher suggested withdrawal. The House had allowed merchants to deduct bad debt from tax collections, a change Bumpers said killed the bill. The plan would have cut the discount from 2 percent to 1 percent and could have boosted revenue by about 1.1 million dollars but risks revenue losses per the governor.
