Mechanicsburg Ohio native Ruth Alloway balances zoo work at the Columbus Zoo with animal research plans in Africa focusing on elephants. She dreams of studying wildlife in natural habitats, rides a motorbike to Texas then boards a freighter to Africa. She paints animal scenes, assists in periodontics at Ohio State, teaches dental X-ray to postgrads, studied nursing and medical illustration, and works nights as a waitress to fund the voyage. Ranger the raccoon is her constant woodland companion.
