Peace Comes to the Coal Industry

Washington reports a basic agreement on terms of a new anthracite labor contract, signaling peace for the coal industry. Joan L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers and anthracite operators announced accord on settlement principles, final details to be ratified today. The pact covers 78,000 miners in northeastern Pennsylvania and mirrors the soft coal deal with a 70 cent daily wage boost and a 10 cent royalty increase for welfare payments. Lewis pressed for a larger royalty but accepted the same increase. An earlier three day work week ended as negotiations set a five day week, with time and a half for this weekend. Senator Taft criticized Truman administration handling of the soft coal strike, arguing earlier injunctions could have stopped it and warning of future emergencies. The soft coal strike persisted until a contract was reached last weekend. Lewis’ union was acquitted of contempt charges, an appeal is set for April 26.
