The Associated Press reports showers and thunderstorms moving northward across Arkansas Friday. Forecasts show a 20 percent chance of precipitation in the northern portion today and tonight, rising to 30 percent in the southern portion during the period.

CHARLOTTE NC AP Reports from standing committees opened Thursday after heated debate in the 115th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the U S. Amendments abolished the office of assistant pastor and altered minister hiring rules. Congregations must hire ministers. earlier sessions could hire assistants. A close vote endorsed career evaluation by an accredited counseling center for ministerial candidates with results shared with the presbytery committee on candidates.
Newly elected officers for the Arkansas County Agricultural Agents Association for the coming year are Thomas G. Fudge secretary treasurer Pine Bluff W J Rimmer president elect Clarksville and R J Haney president El Dorado. They were chosen at the 38th annual convention at the Downtown Holiday Inn Little Rock. Charles E Bishop president University of Arkansas spoke on education programs and the 40 percent return on research extended through Extension staff. Directors represent eight Extension districts Loyal W Swaim Hampton J O Gibson Harrison Paul Huenefeld Heber Springs Joel Ferguson DeWitt A J Kennedy Danville James J Hood Jr Nashville Charlie R Gordon Clarendon and W R Hart Jonesboro.

He warns the drift toward conflict could erupt into a harsher war and trigger an oil embargo if not halted, citing meetings with Sadat and Rabin and stressing movement over stalemate. He defends Nixon pardon and notes domestic campaign issues ahead. He also says Kissinger will stay, and U.S. prestige loss in Asia pressures defense commitments with Japan and Korea.
In Lisbon, Portugal, Premier Goncalves's leftist government briefly admitted Communist printers to the Republica newspaper plant, then expelled them after Socialist threats to quit the cabinet. COPCON security officers restricted access, while talks aimed to resolve factional control continue. Separately, in Arkansas, two expelled students from Mena High School were found to be denied due due process, with further court proceedings ordered to assess good faith by officials.

Mrs. Gennie Avery of Delight and Nash ville origins dies at 83 in a Murfreesboro nursing home. Funeral held 2 pm Thursday at First Baptist Church of Delight with Reverends Shephard and Moran officiating. Burial in Delight Cemetery. Survivors include son J. D. Avery of Greenville South Carolina three daughters Nora Adams Houston Texas Flora Helen Rogers Stanford Connecticut Annie Harris Murfreesboro Arkansas a brother Egbert Jones Fresno California 19 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
A Roman Catholic bishops delegation met President Ford to seek support for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court abortion ruling. They urged federal policy respect for Congress and states to legislate on the matter and for federal agencies not to push permissive abortion policies. Ford reportedly made no commitment. Betty Ford’s views on abortion are described as more liberal than her husband’s.
