The Associated Press reports a 30 percent chance of rain in northern Arkansas today and Wednesday and a 20 percent chance in the southern half. Thunder showers are possible statewide with showers lingering into midweek.
The National Weather Service forecasts most precipitation as showers from a southward moving trough, with a cold front expected to enter Arkansas by Thursday. Weekend temps near seasonal highs. Overnight lows mid 60s to 80s statewide, with specifics for Little Rock Pine Bluff El Dorado Texarkana Fort Smith Fayetteville and Memphis.
Republicans push to weaken the act with five year extension and select coverage rules. Proposals would let states avoid coverage by meeting turnout and discrimination limits, expand court oversight, add language minority protections, and extend bilingual voting aid to areas with 5 percent language minorities. Hope native Charles Hues Smith 38 of Hope becomes Cape Coral Florida zoning director effective January 1 after serving as acting zoning varitor since retirement. Smith joined the city in 1974 as a building inspector with prior work as a construction superintendent in Arkansas and Florida. He holds a BA in economics from Henderson College, served as a captain in the US Army, and is married to Nuria with two daughters Tammy and Vy.
NEW YORK AP Several thousand AEA Express workers were ordered by union chief to end a wildcat strike that halted deliveries in Chicago Detroit Atlanta Cincinnati and New York City. The walkout protested layoffs and pay cuts under federal bankruptcy plans for the company which filed for reorganization February 18 and announced terminal closures across OC states Puerto Rico and Canada.

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat praised Israel for announcing a reduction of forces along the Suez Canal and indicated that cargo bound for Israel could pass through the canal if further concessions follow. In Salzburg, Sadat called the move encouraging and said it could resume momentum for peace. Rabin announced Israel would withdraw half of its 7,000 soldiers, 30 tanks and all artillery from the six mile wide zone adjoining the UN buffer zone before the canal reopens, saying the aim was to show the world Israel seeks peace. Egypt said Israeli ships bound for Israel on non-Israeli vessels would be barred from the canal, a ban to be eased only if military commanders view the thinning as serious and not propaganda. Kissinger said he did not expect Egyptian concessions in return, while Sadat stated that cargo through the canal would not be a problem if Israel continues its current conduct.
Three Protestant men were shot and killed on the Belfast Dublin road near Newry, a border town, with at least one UDR member among them. All three were married. The slaying raises Northern Ireland’s death toll to 1,229 in six years of sectarian violence. Officials cited possible Catholic retaliation after Protestant violence and IRA cease-fire events.
