Resistance to Phone Settlement Ends Jobs Slow to Return
Scattered resistance to a proposed Bell Telephone System contract with the Communications Workers of America continued today while most of the nation's telephone workers resumed work. New York State's 42,000 striking CWA members largely stayed off duty, honoring local union leaders. Picketing persisted at company facilities with resistors in Akron, Denver, Denver, Arizona, New Mexico and Wyoming defying a Beirne back to work order. Secret ballots on the three year proposal will take about two weeks. if rejected, a new strike would begin August 19. The package includes a 43% wage and benefit rise, costing an estimated $4 billion. Top pay for senior operators and craftsmen under the old contract was $118 and $19.
