Alex H Washburn laments rising kidnaping to a dangerous national issue. Three men abducted a Hope store manager and a St. Louis salesman then released them near De Queen after a 65 mile drive. Editorial urges Arkansas to adopt a stiff penalty to deter cross state line kidnaping.
The House approved a 9 million dollar crop production loan bill from RC funds for this year, with Senate action pending. A. T. Jewell, Hope citizen, announced the first loan under the Regional Agricultural Credit Corporation, which handles Arkansas loans from St. Louis with a Pine Bluff active office. Loans are agricultural or livestock based, secured by chattel mortgages, no real estate loans, 7 percent interest to cover inspection costs, with maturities of up to one year for livestock and eight months for feeder loans, during harvest season.
Judge J. H. Meek announced Pine Bluff Regional Agricultural Credit Corporation loans for crop production livestock fruit growing filed with the local branch are approaching a total of 835,599 dollars from 749 applications. The branch has approved 298 loans totaling 312,034 dollars and disbursed 112 loans for 89,468 dollars with 369 applications pending for 355,? dollars.
Nashville authorities report Col Luke Lea and Luke Lea Jr face extradition to North Carolina over a bank conspiracy case. Extradition papers were sent by North Carolina officials after the Leas, under sentence, appealed to the U S Supreme Court twice unsuccessfully.

A Mexican subsidiary of a major American airline transported 2,000,000 Mexican gold pesos totaling about 1 million dollars from several Mexico City banks to the United States in one month. It marked the largest gold air shipment in Mexico's history.
A monument to Christopher Columbus is being built at Santo Domingo. When finished the Columbus Cross will appear as a cross from above and serve as a lighthouse for sea and air navigation, with an estimated cost near 1,000,000 dollars.
A bill to form a joint committee to study borrowing 35 million dollars from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to retire road improvement district bonds was adopted. If feasible, Arkansas would issue 35 million in state bonds to back the loan, retiring them over time. Senate defeated a plan for a reciprocal truck license pact with neighboring states. A highway reorganization bill with a February 1 effective date was introduced in the house.
A House investigative committee in Little Rock met Monday night to probe Attorney General Hal Norwood and the hiring of special attorneys. The panel plans to call State Comptroller Griffin Smith as its lead witness and will confer with him soon. Leo Nyberg accuses Norwood of alarm over the resolution and questions the speaker’s handling and impartiality.
James A. Stillman retired banker was summoned to court in Brooklyn by Luc Rochefort of Montreal. The suit seeks 200000 dollars claiming Stillman alienated Rocheforts affections of Mrs Rochefort. Rochefort, a former mayoral candidate, is shown with his wife in prior coverage.

Stillman. He plans to base the case on three letters signed Jim allegedly to his wife.
Mrs A F Lane aged 65 died Saturday night at her home north of Emmet from pneumonia. She was buried Sunday afternoon at Emmet. Surviving are two daughters and one son: Mrs Bascom Mitchell, Harve McCorkle of Emmet, and Lane of Hope.
A city primary in Hope City shows 26 candidates for eight offices. At 2:15 p m the Star tallies 510 votes with an expected final total around 700 or 750. Ward by ward counts: Ward One 198 and projected 310-340. Ward Two 155. Ward Three 97 projected 130. Ward Four 60 projected about 85. Counting to follow after 6 pm.
Stanley Swede Anderson a St Louis underworld figure who escaped a U S marshal near New Orleans by leaping from a moving train was shot and killed near Baton Rouge while fleeing northward on a fast freight He was shot by a deputy sheriff near Louisiana State University after leaping from the train
Robbers entered the Western Union telegraph office in Prescott Monday night and carted away the office safe. They chopped through a wooden partition and took the safe, opening it later at their leisure. The loss included about $20 in cash, some money orders and drafts, and the Prescott office records.
W. S. Barksdale, a youthful milk truck driver, and two companions escaped serious injury when their milk truck collided with Mrs. Tom Craddock’s car in Lynchburg Virginia. Milk cans flew from the truck and drenched the trio in a deluge of dairy.
The United States retains the Gordon Bennett balloon race trophy after three consecutive victories and the event will be continued this fall. Clifford Harmon of the International League of Aviators donates a new trophy on condition that the original name remains unchanged.
Albert S. Madding 37 former district highway engineer for Pine Bluff was found dead in a Little Rock hotel room with a bullet wound and pistol in his hand. A note to a Pine Bluff undertaker was left. Coroner awaiting autopsy. He had been ill and registered since January 18. He resigned in 1931 amid investigations into his district office finances. Survived by widow and one child. He previously served as Blytheville city engineer and worked on drainage near New Orleans before Pine Bluff assignment.
In Little Rock area authorities probe an acid attack on Miss Gladys Strickland. Suspect Mrs Es sie Gilmore, 38, remains sought while her daughter Estelle Waterson and son-in-law Ben Waterson face maiming charges after being detained in Pulaski county jail. Plasterer James Edward Lewis, 38, says he lived with Gilmore and was keeping company with Strickland. He faces possession of a still producing mask and liquor charges and aided in locating Gilmore and the Watersons. They were arrested at El Dorado and returned to Little Rock by deputies Ernest Tipton and Jeff Davis.
Finland plans to convert military sites into aviation facilities with a proposal from the Air Defense League to build nineteen airports and thirty three small fields using unemployed workers. The report notes there are no commercial air ports in the country and outlines a large development program.
C Lewis and Oscar Uthoff survived a dawn kidnapping by the Floyd gang. The duo were forced at pistol point to drive to Washington and beyond before escaping after being tied and gagged in a wooded area.
