An Associated Press report notes dense fog in Arkansas prompting a National Weather Service advisory. Forecasters say the fog should lift as the morning progresses and the atmospheric conditions improve.
The high pressure ridge off the Florida coast drives a mild South trend into Friday with partly cloudy skies. Fog was common Wednesday but sun broke through in most areas. highs range mid 60s to low 70s and overnight lows 40s to mid 50s. Regional readings include Pine Bluff 57 El Dorado 53 Texarkana 50 Fayetteville 35 Harrison 49 Jonesboro 55 Memphis 61 Little Rock 52 Fort Smith 40. Rain totals for 24 hours ending 7 am show trace Memphis and Jonesboro and .01 at El Dorado.
Elwyn J. Powell aged 73 a pioneer in agricultural news broadcasting died Tuesday in Portland Maine He helped create the broadcasting arm of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics in Washington during the late 1930s Stephen Suey Welch 75 a longtime figure in professional boxing died Wednesday in Long Beach Calif He managed many fighters with Gorilla Jones winning the world middleweight title in 1932 33
Remains of Washington Cook of Ithaca New York to be buried with graveside services Saturday at 10 a.m. in Snell Cemetery Emmet. Survivors include wife Melva and four sons and a daughter. Cook was killed in a December 29 Ithaca auto accident. Cremation followed. Burial also noted for Mrs Mary Pittman 91 with services planned. Dorothy Castleman 19 funeral details given with survivors listed. Clarence E Lovejoy 79 former Lovejoys College Guide died in Red Bank New Jersey. served as Eisenhower's public relations director in Europe.
Charles Jester of Citizens National Bank spoke on personal financing and inflation at the Kiwanis Club meeting in Hope. He warned Arkansas moral limits hurt investment, praised real estate and art as strong hedges, and noted inflation running about 7 percent while the dollar weakens.
Hope Federal Savings & Loan Association annual meeting announced two new directors James W. Lester and Kenneth C. Paddie. J P Duffie retires as director after 40 years. Fred O. Ellis becomes chairman and president. Leonard F. Ellis is promoted to vice president. Marcine Abbott named secretary treasurer. Reid Clark named assistant secretary-treasurer. The review highlighted gains in assets deposits and loans.
Over five years 1969 to 1973 donors are listed by Haskell Jones with totals 12 pints and up. Willie Reardon leads the period with 19 pints while others include W T Sanders Evert Ehlert Elizabeth Cheatham Lloyd Smittle Luther Holloman Ed Aslin and Willie Sheppard. Dunlop suggested relaxing price controls across several industries including food manufacturing. He noted broad agreement to lift controls at the retail end in one fell swoop. He warned wage-price controls, in place since 1971, fail to curb inflation as wholesale prices rise through April and retail food prices jump, fueling higher wage settlements.
