The National Weather Service says springlike temperatures will end as cooler air moves into northwest Arkansas tonight and spreads across the state by Saturday. Thursday highs ranged across several values as the pattern shifts.
The Hope Star reports mid 60s to low 70s today with cooler 50s to 60s Saturday. Scattered showers and thundershowers are forecast mainly in the south and east. Overnight lows range from 30s northwest to 60s southeast with city readings from Pine Bluff to Fort Smith in the 50s and 60s. Rainfall totals include Pine Bluff trace and Little Rock .03 inches. Experiment station records show a high 72 and low 57.

Dr. W A Owings president of the UALR AAUP chapter released a position paper on academic freedom related to history professor Grant Cooper. Cooper says he aligns with Marxist Progressive Labor and teaches from a Communist viewpoint, with a contract not renewed after 1975. Owings distributed copies to lawmakers, arguing firing Cooper for beliefs would trigger a witch hunt and noting other faculty affiliations.
The Hope Optimist Men heard Ray Lawrence of the First National Bank of Hope discuss periods of confusion from three views. He cited the financial crisis shown by lower Dow Jones averages and volatile prime rates, the energy shortage likely a face-off between government and big oil, and a moral crisis indicated by federal government events. He urged individual action as the seed of change and noted the club is conducting a membership drive with weekly 7 p.m. meetings at the Rodeway Inn.

Hemsted Home Inc sponsors a nearly completed 80 bed facility off South Main Street in front of Hempstead County Hospital. Hope Federal Savings funds about 400000 for construction with four day rooms two nursing stations and a garden. In a long range study using baboons, researchers from Mount Sinai report that chronic alcohol consumption causes all stages of liver disease independent of nutrition. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, supports alcohol as the direct cause of cirrhosis and identifies the baboon as a model for human alcoholism research. A separate Fayetteville murder case notes Bruce Davis, 28, innocent of first degree murder in the 1973 beating of Octavia Vanderslice with trial set for March 19-20.
Funeral services for Vera Mae Nicholas of Stamps were held at Sardis Methodist Church with burial in Sardis Cemetery.
