Egypt seeks UN plan to push for peace guidelines
Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad spoke with Egypts UN ambassador Mohammed El Zayyat on Tuesday and asked him to relay the plan to UN mediator Gunnar V. Jarring. Al Gomhouria says the plan urges a UN Security Council meeting before February 5 to draft peace guidelines based on November 1967 resolutions, including Israeli withdrawal and secure borders. The plan also calls for a total Israeli evacuation of occupied territory. Israel has submitted proposals to Jarring but not released them publicly. Cairo papers view Egypts willingness to sign a peace treaty ending 22 years of conflict as essential before any talks on refugees, economy, cease-fire, demilitarized zones, and POW exchanges. Al Ahram notes Jarring may publish the Israeli proposals. Egypt proposes that the Big Four bear responsibility by joining a proposed peacekeeping force.
