Ice Storm Watch Issued For Northwest Arkansas

The National Weather Service issued an ice storm watch for the northwest half of Arkansas as precipitation was expected to end from the west Friday. Roads in some areas of north Arkansas were already ice-covered and hazardous for travel.

Weather closes plants and schools across Arkansas

Hazardous conditions this morning forced school closures in Benton, Boone, Newton, Marion, Searcy, Madison and Carroll counties. Levi Strauss plant in Harrison shut down, affecting about 500 workers. Five tractor trailers jackknifed in Benton County with no injuries reported. The Weather Service attributed the cold air and front to thunderstorms in the south and freezing rain in the north, with temperatures dipping to the teens in northwest Arkansas and 60s in the south.

Fire kills four Whittemore children in New Bedford

Flames swept through a town house at Evergreen Park in New Bedford killing Earl 4 TerriAnn 7 Ronald 10 and Cindy 13 of Mrs Dale M Whittemore. The mother escaped unharmed and neighbor Abelardo Guadalupe 35 and his brother tried to rescue them but failed. The family had another loss when Howard 8 was killed in 1972 by a car.

Auditors Will Probe U S Refinery Profits And Prices

State to back Worthen antitrust appeal at Supreme Court

Larry Barton Named Project Coordinator for Southwest Arkansas RC&D

Larry Barton has been appointed project coordinator for the Southwest Arkansas RC&D Project based in Hope. He brings 17 years with the Soil Conservation Service, including posts as district conservationist at Rison, Sheridan, and Hot Springs. Barton, a Fordyce native, earned forestry degree from the University of Arkansas at Monticello in 1957 and Kellog Fellowship study at North Carolina State University in 1969. He and his wife Sharlene, from Strong, Ark, have four children and will move to Hope.
