The Associated Press reports warmer air moving into Arkansas as temperatures rise after a cold spell. Lows Monday morning ranged from eight degrees at Gilbert to 26 at Texarkana as clear skies and a brisk north wind kept the day chilly despite bright sunshine.

The Washington Supreme Court sustained UW policy favoring minority applicants, arguing it serves the state’s interest in increasing minority lawyers. DeFunis, admitted after a lower court strike, remains in law school under a stay and is set to graduate in June amid broad attention from law schools and civil rights groups.
Senator J W Fulbright declared confidence the Arab oil embargo would be lifted soon after speaking at an Arkansas Farm Family of the Year luncheon in Little Rock. He credited Kissinger’s diplomacy, noted no inside info, and warned fuel shortages threaten European and Japanese demand for U S crops while stressing food production ties to fuel prices and trucking.
In a news conference Nixon said confidential materials surrendered to Jaworski would be handled to protect rights of defendants and ongoing prosecutions. He argued impeachment could hinge on abuse of trust or a criminal offense, and expressed resolve to stay in office through much of his term. He predicted a favorable year for administration candidates if peace and prosperity hold. Also noted a rare stamp sale, the British Guiana 1856 one-cent magenta, bought for $280,000.

Joe Jones retires from the bakery business due to ill health after joining his brother Roy at City Bakery on South Main Street in 1934 and taking over in 1947. The shop, now Joe's City Bakery, is under new ownership by Rufus and Margaret Stovall of Prescott. The Jones family thanks Hope and surrounding area for patronage and friendship, trusting customers will continue with the Stovalls' offerings.
Eight teenagers joyriding in a stolen station wagon in Oakville Ontario were killed when the car slid down a bank into Sixteen Mile Creek Monday night. A ninth teen was seriously injured after jumping out as the vehicle descended and a tenth briefly exited to stretch his legs before the fatal ride. Police said the car was reported stolen Monday evening and it was unclear whether the eight victims drowned or died from impact.
Nixon proposed multi step raises for Congress, federal judges, and top executive officials. Congressional pay would rise from 42,500 to 45,700 this year, 49,100 next year, and 52,800 by 1976. Cabinet members and Supreme Court justices would jump to 64,500 next year. Resolutions before the Post Office Committee offered options from disapproval of all raises to blocking increases for Congress or allowing only judges to rise.
At a February 22 luncheon at Twen and Country Restaurant Earl O Neal introduced Rev Ralph Madison of First Presbyterian Church for a program on church architecture. Madison showcased Byzantine to Renaissance styles with detailed slides.
