Not Good Industrial Year for Arkansas
Arkansas faced a slow year for industrial growth in 1970-71 with 58 new plants and 54 expansions, totaling 112 developments and about 90.2 million dollars in capital investment creating 8,127 jobs. Director Roebuck cited energy shortages, notably gas, as a key constraint limiting potential investments and jobs, with national effects reflected in an interstate pipeline curtailment. The Arkansas Business and Economic Review noted unemployment trends, personal income gains, and retail sales rising in late 1970, but farm cash receipts lagged due to a two-month lockout, with seasonal receipts dipping to 272.248 million, the lowest third-quarter level since 1968.
