Eavesdropping deemed obsession at Southwestern Bell

James Ashley, ex Southwestern Bell executive, testifies in a $4 million invasion of privacy suit alleging the company wired taps and eavesdropped on calls to aid defense in a separate $29 million libel suit. He says wiretapping was common, part of service monitoring, and that he was urged to cooperate with law enforcement. He claims many employees are fired for policy violations but not for listening in. The suit names decades of internal surveillance and a former Texas executive's death as context, with no trial date yet.
