Baptist leader calls Mills to resign in protest

Little Rock clothier James T. Karam a Baptist lay leader urged Rep. Wilbur Mills to resign after Mills appeared on stage in Boston with a stripper. Karam offered his store as a protest headquarters and said ministers should “stand up and be counted,” warning those who do not to leave the ministry.

Supermarket price freeze expands to more chains

Two more supermarket groups join the price freeze, Alterman Foods, operator of 101 stores in Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama, and the Giant chain, announcing a line on retail prices until January 1. They will keep prices on over 10,000 items, with only reductions possible, and Giant will freeze on private-label items today for a month. Other chains, including Colonial Scores, A&P, and Kroger, have also adopted temporary freezes.

Obituary for Edgar F Formby in Little Rock hospital

Edgar Fred Formby died after a lengthy illness in a Little Rock hospital late Tuesday. A World War I veteran, he belonged to First Baptist Church and was a 50 year Whitfield Mason Lodge member and American Legion member. Survived by wife Alice K. Formby of Hope, daughter Mrs. Holland Brown of Pine Bluff, one grandson, two brothers Elias Formby of Patmos and Arther Formby of Springhill, La, along with several nieces and nephews. Funeral services are Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Herndon Chapel with Dr. S A Whitlow officiating, burial in Rosehill Cemetery under Herndon Funeral Home direction.

Pryor Wins Arkansas Governor Race with Big Lead

Official returns show Democrat David H. Pryor with 358,018 votes to Republican Ken Coon 187,872. Secretary of State Kelly Bryant certified results with write-in Joseph Weston at 84 votes. Lieutenant governor went to Democrat Joe Purcell 406,040 and Republican Leona Troxell 121,303. Amendments 57 56 55 54 faced mixed outcomes with 57 defeated 66,905 for 426,197 against, 56 approved 242,419 for 230,014 against, 55 defeated 244,907 against 219,566 for, and 54 passed 259,369-210,830.

Pine Bluff Parks audit underway sparks tension

A special Pine Bluff Parks and Recreation Department audit is under way.
